Srinagar to Jammu LMVs Allowed Highway Yet to be Fully Restored

Updated: September 17, 2025 67 Views

The Jammu–Srinagar National Highway (NH-44), which serves as the vital road link between Kashmir and the rest of the country, is still not fully restored for smooth vehicular movement. According to officials, the stretch at Tharad in Udhampur remains a major concern as only single-lane traffic is being managed due to an uneven road surface and persistent rainfall in the region. This has led to slow traffic movement, creating difficulties for commuters and transporters.

In its latest advisory, the Traffic Police Headquarters J&K said that all drivers and travelers must follow strict lane discipline to avoid unnecessary congestion. The department emphasized that while the highway is functional, the situation demands patience and cooperation from commuters, especially given the fragile road condition caused by weather-related disruptions.

Subject to fair weather and road clearance, Light Motor Vehicles (LMVs) will be allowed to travel one-way from Srinagar towards Jammu on Wednesday, September 17. Vehicles will be permitted to move from the Navyug Tunnel, Qazigund side, between 6 am and 11 am. However, the advisory made it clear that no movement of traffic will be allowed from Jammu towards Srinagar on the same day.

Traffic authorities have also provided specific guidelines for vehicles heading towards Doda, Kishtwar, and Ramban. LMVs from Jammu to these districts will be allowed to cross Nagrota between 7 am and 10 am. Similarly, vehicles coming from Doda, Kishtwar, and Ramban towards Jammu must ensure that they cross the Nashri Tunnel before 10 am to avoid restrictions and possible congestion.

Meanwhile, other important routes, including the Mughal Road, Kishtwar–Sinthan–Anantnag road, and the Srinagar–Sonamarg–Gumari road, will continue to remain open. Their movement, however, will be regulated by concerned agencies depending on the weather conditions and clearance status.

The authorities have advised commuters to remain cautious, avoid unnecessary travel, and strictly follow the directions of traffic personnel on duty. With the highway yet to be fully restored, travelers have been urged to stay updated with the latest advisories and plan their journeys accordingly. Officials added that efforts are being made to restore the road at the earliest, but the weather continues to pose challenges for smooth traffic management.
