Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Kavinder Gupta, on Tuesday led the Police Commemoration Day ceremony, paying heartfelt tribute to the brave police personnel who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty.
Speaking at the event attended by officers, soldiers, and dignitaries, the LG expressed deep pride in the dedication and service of Ladakh Police. “Today, we remember our martyrs with gratitude and humility. Police Commemoration Day reminds us of the ideals of duty, discipline, and sacrifice that define India’s police forces,” Gupta said, as reported by Kashmir News Observer (KNO).

Highlighting the sacrifices made this year, the LG noted that 91 personnel from different police and paramilitary forces laid down their lives while serving the nation.
He paid special homage to Inspector Phang Namgyal of Ladakh Police, who lost his life during a search-and-rescue operation in the Indus River. “His bravery and commitment to duty will always inspire future generations. Inspector Namgyal’s sacrifice is a source of pride for the entire Ladakh Police force,” Gupta said, recalling that the officer was posthumously awarded the State Bravery Award on Republic Day 2012.
Gupta lauded the Ladakh Police, led by DGP S.D. Singh Jamwal, for maintaining peace, harmony, and public confidence in the Union Territory despite its tough terrain and harsh conditions. “Maintaining public trust and ensuring the safety of every citizen is the highest duty of the police, and I am proud of Ladakh Police’s unwavering commitment,” he said.
The LG urged police personnel to follow the example of Inspector Namgyal and uphold the values of dedication, compassion, and integrity. Addressing Ladakh’s youth, he said, “You are the guardians of Ladakh’s future. Stay disciplined and serve with pride — your efforts will make this land stronger and safer.”
Expressing gratitude to the families of police and security personnel, Gupta said their patience and sacrifices form the foundation of the nation’s security. Quoting former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, he added, “India’s true strength lies in the dedication and sense of duty of its people.”
“Let us honor our martyrs by rededicating ourselves to the ideals of service, justice, and unity,” the LG concluded.
Meanwhile, similar Police Commemoration Day events were held at District Police Lines Kargil, where officials, army officers, and family members of martyrs paid floral tributes at the Martyrs’ Memorial.
