A major inspection drive has started across Srinagar after reports of contaminated cough syrups causing child deaths in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. The initiative has been launched by Assistant Drugs Controller of District Srinagar, Ms. Reema Gizala, who is leading a team of Drug Control Officers to ensure the safety and quality of medicines sold in the market.
The inspection drive, which began on October 4, 2025, is being carried out by officers including Mr. Junaid Naseer, Mr. Sajad Wani, Mr. Sameer Sajad, Mr. Ashraf Khanday, Ms. Shaila Farooqui, Ms. Hadiya Shah, and Mr. Zulfiqar Ali. The main focus of the inspection is to check the sale and purchase records of cough syrups and cold medicines meant for children.
Retail drug sellers have also been given a government advisory asking them to strictly avoid giving cough syrups to children below two years of age. The team is making sure all drug stores follow the safety rules and proper record-keeping as per the guidelines.
So far, officials have collected 26 samples of cough syrups from different brands for testing. They have also seized 144 bottles of Respifresh TR Syrup (Batch No. RO1GL2523) manufactured by Rednex Pharmaceuticals Pvt. Ltd., Ahmedabad. This action came after the Drug Testing Laboratory in Bhopal found that the syrup contained high levels of Diethylene Glycol, a harmful chemical that can be dangerous for children if consumed.
Authorities said the inspection and sampling of pediatric cough syrups will continue in all areas of Srinagar. The ongoing checks will also ensure proper GST compliance by medical retailers. The Health Department has assured the public that strict measures will be taken against any drug stores found violating safety norms.
