The Congress party is gearing up to claim one of the three Rajya Sabha seats from Jammu and Kashmir, with senior leader Digvijay Singh expected to hold discussions with the National Conference (NC) leadership over the matter.
Sources told the news agency Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that Singh, the former Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, will soon meet NC president Dr. Farooq Abdullah or Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to formally push for Congress’ claim. The talks are expected to center on securing one of the three seats that the NC-Congress coalition is set to comfortably win in the upcoming elections scheduled for October 24.
According to insiders, the Congress high command had, back in April, entrusted Digvijay Singh with the responsibility of overseeing the INC-NC partnership in J&K. His role also includes engaging in high-level talks to strengthen the coalition, particularly as the Rajya Sabha polls approach.
In the current scenario, the NC-Congress alliance is in a strong position, likely to secure three of the four Rajya Sabha seats, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is expected to take the fourth seat. Numbers in the Assembly clearly reflect this balance: the ruling coalition holds 53 members, whereas the BJP has 28 legislators.
On the other hand, the non-BJP opposition bloc consists of just seven members—three from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), one each from the People’s Conference (PC) and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), and two independents. This puts the alliance of NC and Congress in a decisive position when it comes to the Rajya Sabha elections.
With political strategies intensifying, the final outcome will depend on the coalition’s internal agreements. Digvijay Singh’s upcoming talks are expected to play a key role in shaping how the seats are shared and how the partnership between the two parties moves forward in J&K. —(KNO)
