Jammu and Kashmir has received 41 per cent excess rainfall from June to September this year, even as frequent flood threats continue to worry residents. According to data from the Meteorological Department (MeT), accessed by Kashmir News Observer (KNO), five districts in Jammu region — Udhampur, Samba, Rajouri, Ramban and Doda — recorded “large excess rainfall” between June 1 and September 3, 2025.

Areas where rainfall exceeds 60 per cent above normal are placed in the “large excess” category. This surplus has come after back-to-back years of deficit rainfall.

Dry Years Before the Surplus

Jammu and Kashmir had recorded its driest year in five decades in 2024, with a deficit of 29 per cent rainfall. The previous years also saw shortages — 7% deficit in 2023, 16% in 2022, 28% in 2021, and 20% in 2020.

Excess Rainfall in Capitals and South Kashmir

The data also shows that Srinagar and Jammu, the summer and winter capitals of J&K, are among the five stations that recorded “excess rainfall” during this period. The other stations in this category include Anantnag, Pulwama and Reasi.

Rainfall between 20% and 59% above normal falls under the “excess” category.

Normal and Deficit Rainfall Recorded

Seven stations, including Budgam, Ganderbal, Bandipora, Baramulla, Kulgam, Kathua and Poonch, recorded normal rainfall this season.

However, three stations reported a deficit — Kishtwar (33%), Kupwara (20%) and Shopian (57%).

More Rain Predicted Till September 12

The MeT office has forecast more spells of rain and thunderstorms over the next few days.

Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad, Director MeT, told KNO that cloudy weather with one or two spells of light rain and thunder was expected today, with the possibility of moderate showers in some districts of Jammu division.
