Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Tuesday said that any mistake made by Doda MLA Mehraj Malik could have been addressed within the Legislative Assembly, and there was no justification for slapping the Public Safety Act (PSA) against him.
Speaking to reporters, the Chief Minister questioned the decision of the authorities. “What did Malik do that required PSA? If he had committed a mistake, it could have been corrected in the Assembly under the supervision of the Speaker. Such a harsh law should not have been applied to him,” Omar Abdullah said.
He further stated that the situation in Doda was peaceful. “There was no law and order problem, no stone pelting, no riots, yet the MLA was booked under PSA. This is completely unjust and will only weaken the people’s trust in democracy,” he remarked.

Omar Abdullah also criticized the selective approach of the administration, saying that while ordinary people are being called to police stations and questioned, no action is being taken against those who disturbed the religious atmosphere in Hazratbal.
The Chief Minister recalled earlier incidents as well, saying, “On July 13, many leaders were arrested, and on July 14, when I went to the graveyard, I was pushed by the police.”
